The BS/MD programme
The Bachelor of Science (BS) is an accelerated programme especially designed for
those science students who have completed plus 2 in Science/ I. Sc. or equivalent
degree with two years of instruction in Biology, Chemistry, English and one year
of instruction in Mathematics. Upon completion of plus 2 in Science or an equivalent
degree, students are eligible to enter this programme (BS), which is of three semesters
having 92 units altogether. Of the three semesters of BS, Nepalese students will
complete two semesters (59 units) at GEMS, Nepal and the final semester at AUF,
the Philippines.
Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Science in Biology, students will
enter the Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme at AUF, which is a four- year course
in medicine followed by one year internship in various hospitals of the Philippines
including AUF Medical centre. Students who wish to study the Doctor of Medicine
in the Philippines should firstly undergo the Bachelor of Science in Biology. Hence,
this is called a binary programme. In the educational system of the Philippines,
students after completing the tenth grade are directly enrolled for a Bachelors
Degree, which is of four years having at least 150 units. However, only a two-year
plus 2 programme or I. Sc. is offered in Nepal in which students complete at least
58 units of BS Biology offered in the Philippines, during their studies.

This binary programme is patterned after a similar programme of the University of
Maine and the University of New England in the United State of America. In this
particular binary programme, the BS Biology students of the University of Maine,
enter the College of Medicine of the University of New England after completing
103 units. After taking more units in the College of Medicine for another year,
these students are granted their BS Biology degree by the University of Maine. Upon
completion of the required units in the College of Medicine, they are granted the
degree, Doctor of Medicine by the University of New England.
